What is the difference between logistics and transport?
Transport is focused on the actual physical process of moving products, while logistics covers a much broader scope of activities that facilitates product movement within the supply chain. Generally speaking, transport pertains to specific types of ground, ocean, or air conveyances (e.g., trucking fleets, shipping vessels, airplanes), while logistics applies to all facets of product storage and management associated with each stage in the supply chain process. Logistics includes procurement and sourcing strategies; inventory control systems; warehousing and order fulfillment services; transportation coordination; distribution networks; customer service operations; tracking tools used throughout the entire process; return management policies or systems related to reverse-flow procedures/processes - among other things.
What are the basic types of transport?
Transport modes are the means supporting the mobility of passengers and freight. They are mobile transport assets and fall into three basic types, land (road, rail, pipelines), water (shipping), and air.
What are the types of freight shipping?
The two main types of freight shipping are truckload and less than truckload (LTL). Truckload involves transporting commodities in a full trailer, while LTL involves consolidation of multiple customers' goods within one trailer. Other modes of freight shipping include intermodal (transportation via multiple modes such as ship, rail and/or truck) and air freight.
